Year 8 students visit the University of Brighton!

Year 8 students visited the Faculty of Education at the University of Brighton last week and were lucky enough to experience some great geography sessions. Students attended hourly sessions based on relevant topics such as Crime mapping using the new police website, Population density, The European Union, What makes a good news report? Also, a lesson that was absolutely rubbish ;) See the photo below! It was great for the students to experience the environment of a higher education establishment and many of them were left feeling overwhelmed with how much they had learned. It also provides trainee teachers with the opportunity to gain experience of planning for and working with gifted and talented students. Thanks again to Mel Norman and the PGCE Geography students at the University of Brighton for organising such a great day.

Africa United is in cinemas now and is a story about three Rwandan children who set off to Rwanda's capital city, Kigali, to audition for the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup. They end up on the wrong bus which takes them on a journey through the heart of Africa. Well worth a watch!

Postcards from the future: how will London be affected by Climate Change?

Climate change is central to London’s future. It will affect every aspect of the city, from buildings and public spaces to the way Londoners live and work.

A display of 14 images will be on display at the Museum of London from 1 October 2010 to 6 March 2011. Like ‘Postcards From The Future’, familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones.

Football is the Lingua Franca...

Football fans in East Africa (including my friends in Ethiopia!) will be watching from the sidelines as the World Cup kicks off for the first time on Africa soil. No country from the east of the continent qualified for South Africa. Read more here from BBC news, they simply don't have the investment.

On Wednesday June 23rd we can miss period 5 for England's final group game and buy a ticket to raise money for Link Ethiopia and provide much needed football facilities and support numerous vocational training programs in Ethiopia. We can buy a ticket for 50p and watch the footy.....or we could go to lesson! ;)

Political geography....

You will know by now that the result of the 2010 election is that the Conservatives have won the most MPs but fallen short of a majority, leading to the first 'hung parliament' since 1974.

Seaford is part of the constituency of Lewes and remains firmly a Liberal Democrat seat, with Norman Baker continuing as MP. The Liberal Democrats have also gained a seat in Eastbourne from the Conservative Party. Brighton goes green as the party gained their first MP (Caroline Lucas) at Westminster. It will be interesting to see what is next for them.

KS3 Geography homework: Term 5

Your extended homework task is to prepare a news presentation on Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull Volcano to answer the following questions:

How can a volcano in Iceland disrupt international travel across a large proportion of the world?

Which individuals and organisations are the winners and losers of the ban on air travel?

You can work individually or in pairs

You must include the following content:
• Location of the volcano
• Causes of the eruption
• The reasons for the volcanic ash cloud
• The impact of wind and weather patterns on the flow of the ash cloud
• The areas of flight travel affected
• Winners and losers – with reasons
• It would be great to get some real case studies of people affected

I arrived back in the UK a few days ago, but it has taken me a while to write this post, simply because I am feeling overwhelmed. I kept a diary whilst I was away, we were so busy and I found that it helped to record my thoughts.

Sunday 4th April 2010
Arrived at Damu hotel in Addis Ababa, just after midnight with Julie and Gianni, my colleagues from Cradle Hill Primary School in Seaford.

The sun rises at 6am every morning, the central highlands that we visited have a temperate climate and average temperature of about 16 degrees- just right! I stepped onto the balcony and sighted a goat killing, this was to be my first memory of Africa.

We met for breakfast with colleagues from the British Council (Nejat and Berhanu), teachers from Asella in Ethiopia (Lemma and Ameha) and teachers from Enugu in Nigeria (Eric, Ernie and Joy). We were also accompanied by an ex student of Asella Preparatory school and now a student at university in Addis (Negash). Negash was also part of the 'Dreams and Teams' project 3 years ago, organised by Link Ethiopia. They are a separate charity that Seaford Head subscribes to and are involved with. The 'Connecting Classrooms' project is a 3 year programme run by the British Council and remained my main aim of the visit, but it was great to be involved with the Link Ethiopia project at the same time.

After our greetings, we then experienced a tour of Addis- the world's third highest capital city with an altitude of 2,400m. I was overwhelmed as we passed through the streets in the shuttle bus. Words can't really describe the scenes. We visited a museum and a church and were shown every single artefact. It was an interesting presentation style!

Back to the hotel for a traditional ceremony that included popcorn, a huge slice of bread and coffee, all at the same time. I thought that was lunch, so I was laughing so much it was embarrassing (I wasn't the only one- Julie! ;)). I couldn't stop- it was surreal, there I was sat in Africa, eating popcorn for lunch, or so I thought. They took it well I think! Then they presented us with lunch in a different room.

We began our 4 hour journey south, along one road to Asella, where we would stay for the next 3 nights. This journey was mad, words can't describe it...dodge the people, bulls, goats, donkeys, other vehicles, it was like Grand Theft Auto in Ethiopia. It was early evening when we arrived at Derartu hotel in Asella and we met some more people who worked at the schools we would be visiting. It was like one big party the whole time, they made us so welcome.

Monday 5th April
Up early for breakfast (apart from Nigeria who clearly forgot to set their alarm!) and then straight into Asella Preparatory School- many famous people in Ethiopia got their education from this school, including the Olympic gold medalist runners Haile Gebrselassie and Derartu Tulu. We had a discussion in Lemma's office about his school and then we were shown around. This school is for those students that have reached the grade in the national exams (equivalent to GCSE) so is similar to our sixth form colleges. They study for two years and take another national exam (equivalent to A-level) and they can then join university.

Meeting with Lemma, Headteacher...

We delivered some training in games based learning, which mainly focused upon strategies to teach the English language. They welcomed our ideas, but it was such a different approach and they can have more than 70 in one class. Playing simple games is a totally new concept for them. We participated in much discussion and shared ideas during our time in all of the schools. The Nigerian teachers said that the government are reducing class sizes in their country, but in reality it is not working. I could not imagine dealing with a situation where I had 40 on the register but 80 turning up!

Delivering some training...

Much of the education in Ethiopia takes place using the 'Plasma'. These educational lessons are broadcast live from Addis to all regions across Ethiopia. The main aim of this is to provide equal opportunities and access to education for all students, including those from rural areas where there are a lack of teachers. A typical lesson using this style of learning involves students taking notes for 40 minutes and then a discussion at the end of the lesson. Many of the teachers are unhappy with this initiative that was introduced 5 years ago- it can't be paused for discussion and is generally not a good thing to be using so frequently. There was a general consensus that it was good for Science lessons as there are no laboratories. Interestingly, Geography was the only subject that did not have to use the plasma screen as they felt it was not a good way to help facilitate the teaching and learning process. So much for different learning styles- PLTS, what's that?! The government recognise the flaws in the use of the Plasma screen and are striving to improve. I asked the teachers what would happen if they chose not to use the Plasma. It was unthinkable to do that, Lemma would not be happy, he is under pressure to make sure it is implemented and believes it to be a political issue.

Lunch was a little unsuccessful, again. Most lunchtimes were hysteria for me, my eyes were watering with laughter and it made everyone else laugh. I thought I would try some traditional food and be all cultured, but when they presented Gianni and I with raw mince we decided to just eat the bread!

After Asella Preparatory School, we visited the Education bureau and municipality in the afternoon- and had discussions about the education policy and strategy in Asella and Ethiopia in general. We were also shown around the cultural museum and then ran back to the hotel as it started to rain, heavily. We had a few St George's and enjoyed chicken tibs for tea (fried meat). These were more successful, I learned my lesson from what went wrong at lunch times and I had worked out how to order the right things from the menu.

Tuesday 6th April
Up early again. We waited a while for the Nigerian teachers to wake up, just for a change! On the agenda was a visit to the 3 cluster schools and we participated in class and school observations. We visited Lemat Behibret School- a primary school in Asella. We were shown around the special needs unit which was just fascinating. We then caused mayhem at breaktime and were bombarded with children wanting to have their photograph taken, touch our skin, hold hands, play football and not want to go back into class. It was an amazing experience but I don't think the teachers approved of the chaos we caused!

In the afternoon we visited Chilalo Terarra High School and we delivered our training again, we managed to incorporate the students this time and they seemed to really enjoy the games we played.

We then returned to Asella Preparatory School. We planted our own tree and gave a short speech and then joined in with the celebrations and cultural show around the camp fire in the evening. They insisted I dance- it was fun. More St George beer!

Wednesday 7th April
We travelled to Lake Langano in the Great Rift Valley- a much hotter climate. It was another hilarious 4 hour mini bus shuttle ride through rural Ethiopia. 22 people in a 15 seater made for an interesting journey, who needs a risk assessment! We mainly took time to relax here and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We ate lunch and made our plans for hosting the Ethiopian and Nigerian teachers back to the UK next year, an exciting agenda for them. We stayed the night at Langano lake, we were slightly worried that there were mosquito nets over the beds. We didn't take the Malaria tablets due to us visiting mainly places at high altitude. However the lake had many more mosquitoes. I now have to spend the next year looking out for symptoms of Malaria, due to being bitten on the ankle.

Thursday 8th April
We had our final breakfast together at the lake and then headed back to Addis, via Debre Zeit. Firew (Link Ethiopia) organised lunch at the lake for us, which was a lovely surprise. We met Chris Grant, the director of Link Ethiopia and the man to give me a job if I want to work over there! We then paid a quick visit to our link school, Ada Model Secondary School in Debre Zeit. I met the students and handed over some of the letters that my students had written.

When we arrived back at Damu hotel in Addis Ababa we visited the British Council office and met with colleagues and discussed the success of the week. We then enjoyed a bit of shopping at the local market, where I purchased some souvenirs to make a display back at school. We met Rooney here, who is friends with Negash and had also been a part of the 'Dreams and Teams' project 3 years ago.

The visit has helped me to prioritise our agenda for the next year. This will be to combine our Link Ethiopia club to the one for Connecting Classrooms and work side by side. We shall create an African garden and raise awareness of the culture in Ethiopia- food tasting, music etc. We will raise money to equip the Science lab at Ada Model School. There will also be more of an emphasis on the importance of making even more connections for students and getting them a contact in the UK, via letters, email, facebook etc. This was so important to the students I met. I would like to incorporate a place study and write a scheme of learning about Ethiopia in time for the summer term.

Saying goodbye to such warm hearted people was very difficult. It was easily the best experience of my life and I learned so much. It was a fantastic opportunity to see how people in Ethiopia live. I was totally humbled to meet such wonderful people and be welcomed into their beautiful country. I remain positive as I made good friends and look forward to when I return- hopefully this summer!

I do hope I have managed to transmit my fascination and enthusiasm to anyone that has read this rather long post...you should visit Ethiopia!

Off to Ethiopia in the morning!

I have been involved in a Connecting Classrooms project for the majority of this academic year. It provides cluster groups of three schools from the UK (Seaford Head Community College, Cradle Hill Primary and Hailsham Community School) with a great opportunity to partner with schools from two different countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia and Nigeria in our case). The aim of the programme is to enable intercultural dialogue and to increase knowledge and understanding of each other's societies.

Tomorrow morning I depart the UK for Ethiopia, in order to meet with teachers from both Ethiopia and Nigeria and to help deliver some training at Assella Prepartory Secondary School. This will mainly be focused upon strategies to teach English. I also look forward to participating in class and school observations and being involved in discussion with students and teachers.

Below is a map of the places I will be travelling to: the capital city Addis Ababa, Assella and the Great Rift Valley lakes of Langano, Ziway and Abiyata.

After the visit we aim to follow up our work with the schools and plan for the teachers from both Ethiopia and Nigeria to visit the UK. Excited and anxious at the same time. I look forward to updating my blog on return, complete with lots of photos!

Year 9 and 10 have been studying the causes, impacts and short term/medium term responses to the Cumbria floods in November 2009, as part of their case study for a flood in an MEDC.

Remember to check out Countryfile on BBC1 from 6-7pm this Sunday. Part of the programme will be focusing on the responses towards farmers. It is four months on from this event, how are farmers dealing with the impacts?

Earthquake in Chile

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 has hit central Chile in South America. The earthquake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

Chile is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", on the edge of the Nazca and South American plates; a subductive plate boundary.

The map below shows the areas within Chile that were affected by the earthquake:

It has been reported that at least 122 people have died, but this number is likely to rise further.

Nations around the Pacific Ocean are on full alert for a possible tsunami following the devastating earthquake.

For this year's Fairtrade Fortnight the Fairtrade Foundation are asking the nation to join them in The Big Swap. During the fortnight they want you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff.

My tutor group, 7D, are baking their own Fair Trade cakes and will be making a swap and using Fair Trade ingredients. They will be on sale in room MD during Friday lunchtime. Come along and try them! :D

I joined PGCEs from both the University of Brighton and Sussex yesterday at the Royal Geographical Society, located in Kensington, London- on Exhibition Road.

This is the first time i have visited the society and enjoyed being shown the 'Hot and Cold' exhibits and learning about the collections and archives held by the RGS. Maps and artefacts from famous explorers like Captain Scott, Ernest Shackleton, David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley were on show. I saw George Mallory's boot that was taken from his mummified foot- 75 years after his death on Mt Everest and Shackleton's Burberry balaclava worn during his expedition of Antarctica in 1907!

Also visited the Natural History Museum (although not for long, due to half term and too many people!)

Earthquake in the classroom!

Today an extraordinary event happened and one that was hard to predict. An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale occurred in room MD. Well done to 8E for quickly getting to safety- under the desks!

It was all over so quickly. The emergency services were very efficient and access to room MD was easy, somehow no one was injured! Thanks to Martin the camera man and light technician and Curtis the sound technician. Brilliant 8E :)

i-360 at Brighton's West Pier

The clean-up operation has started today on Brighton's West Pier after it was severely damaged by storms and a fire in 2002.

The work is a requirement of planning permission for the i360, an observation tower which will stand 150m above sea level and allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the landscape. The i360 has been designed by the team behind the London Eye.

The boards of Cadbury and US giant Kraft Foods have agreed a deal which will see Kraft takeover the British chocolate maker in a deal valuing the company at £11.5bn. Read more here. Kraft will be borrowing 7 billion to finance the deal.

Earthquake in Haiti...

This has been in the news since Tuesday, when a massive earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The earthquake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale and occured 15km from the capital Port au Prince.

Here is an article that highlights freeze-thaw weathering creating potholes in roads- one of the impacts from the recent cold spell and something which year 9 were discussing today. Drove over one myself this morning on the way to work and it managed to put an end to the music i was listening to!

The Queen praised the bravery and commitment of the Armed Forces and went on to highlight the important aspects of the Commonwealth. Just in case you missed it...

You may have also caught Christmas with the other Royle Family, where Barbara puts her foot down and orders Jim to spend their 50th wedding anniversary abroad. In Prestatyn!

Floods in Cumbria...

This week has seen record levels of rainfall flooding parts of Cumbria and border regions. More than 1,300 homes were flooded and many left without power or mains water supplies. Cockermouth was one of the worst affected places, where water levels reached 2.5m (8ft 2in), more than 200 people were rescued by emergency services - 50 by RAF helicopters.

Cadbury Ghana Advert....

Fallon has created a campaign, which features print ads designed and painted by Ghanaians using traditional Ghanaian techniques, and a TV ad filmed in a Ghanaian village. Tinny, one of Ghana’s biggest music stars, features in the advertising along with High Spirits, regarded as one of the country’s best dance troupes. The initiative is aimed at emphasising Cadbury’s 101 year-history of trading with Ghanaian cocoa farmers.

QR Codes: Can you decode this?

QR stands for ‘Quick Response’ as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be downloaded at a high speed. It is very popular in Japan and is starting to catch on in Europe.

The idea is that with a mobile phone which has a camera, you can scan a QR code, and be taken to a website, or be given a phone number or piece of text.

Your phone will need a camera and a QR Code Reader so that you can decode them....

If you have an iphone, download Neo-reader for free from the Apps store. If you have a recent Nokia phone, you are likely to have a QR code reader pre-installed - check in the Office bit of your phone menu.

You can download a reader for many mobile phones- type "QR code reader" and the model of your mobile phone into Google. Alternatively, here is a website that provides a link to readers for other types of mobiles.

Once you've got your QR code reader sorted, have a go at decoding this....

Diaries of a Mexican Superhero...

9A have been considering the different perceptions that surround the issue of migration and developing their skills in creative writing.

They produced some great pieces of writing and designed their own superheroes which they annotated. Their work is now on display in Room 20 on the Arundel Site...

They also had the opportunity to use my Flip video camera and film various scenes of their diaries and put them together as a movie. We had a good laugh on Friday, with Dan's ability to change his accent (more Eastern European and Scottish at times!), the seagulls, the baked beans that enabled Matt to cross the border, Joe walking up the steps of the amphitheatre into the USA! Not forgetting the wasp on the camera at the end. Brilliant 9A!!!!

9B have recently been learning about the different approaches to building sustainable cities. They started off by analysing recent government proposals to build 10 Eco Towns. They were then given the task to create a sustainable place on a paper plate. They each brought a few materials in and spent a lesson creating their Eco Houses. They then had to produce an extended piece of writing justifying their design decisions...

Year 7 Geography and History trip to Bodiam and Rye!

On Monday 19th October (yesterday!), Year 7 students enjoyed a joint Geography and History trip!! In the morning, students visited the medieval moated castle at Bodiam, East Sussex. It was built in 1385 by a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II in order to defend the surrounding area from French invasion. Although, the castle was built more for show, than an effective defence. The highlight for many was climbing the narrow staircase to the top, in order to take in the wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

After lunch at the castle, we then made our way via coach to the ancient town of Rye. Perched on a hill, overlooking the River Rother and Romney Marsh in East Sussex, this compact town allowed us to discover the key places of interest.

Students enjoyed the Rye Town Model Sound and Light show in the Heritage Centre on Strand Quay and this was a good place to start our exploration of Rye's special features.

We then walked through the enchanting cobbled streets, and looked at the medieval church and beautifully preserved historic houses from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times. We also paid a special visit to the Ypres Tower (the castle), to take advantage of some great photo opportunities.

Despite a dodgy looking sky on the way there (some nimbostratus clouds!), the weather held out. A thoroughly enjoyable day! The students did us proud...well done! Here are some photos from the trip. :D

Rio de Janeiro to stage 2016 Olympic Games

Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Olympics, after the city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen to stage the 2016 Games.

Rio won a majority of the 95 votes at the meeting in Copenhagen.

New quake hits Sumatra

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 has hit Sumatra, a day after another powerful quake devastated much of the Indonesian island.

The first earthquake struck at 1716 local time (1016 GMT) on Wednesday, some 85km (55 miles) under the sea, north-west of Padang.

The second quake was on land and struck at 0852 local time on (0152 GMT) on Thursday, about 225km (95 miles) south-east of Padang at a depth of about 25km (15.5 miles).

Officials now say at least 200 bodies have been found from the earlier 7.6 magnitude quake, which triggered landslides and cut power lines.

Wildfires in Greece

The fires near the Greek capital of Athens are still out of control and strong winds are making the flames hard to contain. Although the wind dropped a little on Sunday night, officials warn the flames are still spreading.

The fires which are not unusual this time of year in Greece, have already destroyed many homes and buildings just north of the city. Helicopters and planes have been used to drop water onto the fires, and countries including France, Italy and Cyprus have stepped in to help. More here.

I just came across this film which won at the Tropfest New York film festival in 2008. It was created by Jason van Genderen and shot entirely on a mobile phone with a small budget. Images come from Sydney and New York city. It's an emotional visual poem which builds empathy for neglected street people. I think it is simple but very effective. Perhaps we could have a go at making some short films like this!

Sicily and Mount Etna!

I have not long returned from a week in Sicily and visited various places (Palermo, Catania, Taormina, Acireale), but was really excited about the expedition to the most prominent landmark: Mount Etna! The volcano is Europe's largest active volcano, at approximately 3,330 metres, it towers over the Ionian coastline.

Mount Etna is a stratovolcano made up of four summit craters and is surrounded by 200 major and secondary cones. At the base of Mount Etna we saw typical Sicilian vineyards and orchards on terraced slopes. Our bus stopped outside the village of Zafferana Etnea to enable our group to dismount. We then set off on foot and we reached Bove Valley, a depression on the eastern side of Etna (a caldera formed after a cone collapsed several thousand years ago). It was epic! Below is a bit of footage from my Flip cam!

I am spending holiday time in my hometown of Burton-Upon-Trent at the moment, where all it has done today is rain! Nice to know that Miss Johnson is spending time sunbathing on Brighton beach ;) Not sure what happened to the predicted heatwave though! The Met Office is issuing a revised forecast for more unsettled weather well into August. It is a far cry from the "barbecue summer" it predicted back in April. Read here.
